The city of radiance

Times Square at night, New York

I have always lived it as an infinite exploration. I have understood that people arrive here who already know very well what they are, and they come to this place to share it, to expand it, to inhabit what is theirs. Others of us are dragged by the wind; we plant ourselves in this space to inhabit the spark of finding each other.

I don't want to leave, I want to fly, I want to fly away. Because I have wings shaped like roots, which I have been building little by little, feeling each day in the city of radiance, the radiance of souls with restless jaws that speak with feeling. I remember the first days walking through the city, how I felt the ground and perceived the city growing downward, very deep, incalculable. You walk and see the gloom of the shadows and those who hide in them, or rather, who let the shadows light up their stage, they shout and flutter around from here to there, and if you listen closely you tune in to the message of the play, one so neo-political it becomes laughable and sad until the eyes grow wet and tears fall, full of salt, so you tip your head back to wet your ears and begin to hear the sound of the sea in them. You open your eyes and see how the sky is conquered by the buildings too, and by all the spirits who look after the lights, who look after all of us who are here feeling everything. Abominably, we are in a tree of cement, a jungle, the great jungle, the humid heat on our skin on summer days, the smell of garbage, of dead flesh of every species, marijuana and sweat of every color.

Then the great death, the torment of the sun's departure and the premature nightfall covering the city. Our bones freeze and the brain at last has no energy to think, but nothing stops here, that is an illusion. It's absurd how everything dies and is born. Timi told me it was a vortex, that it sucked everything in and spat it back out, alchemized: he told me about a portal that kidnapped children in Times Square, or well, maybe those really were humans of flesh and blood..

Welcome to the city where we are all sparkling drops in the ocean, that is, as immense as the ocean itself…
